Solar is not one size fits all
Two similar-looking homes can have completely different energy requirements. One household may be empty during the day and use most of its electricity during the evening. Another may have people working from home, a heat pump, air conditioning, a hot tub or electric vehicles.
A standard package cannot account for all of those differences. The number of panels, usable battery capacity and inverter output should be considered together and related to the way the household actually consumes electricity.
Why the questions matter
The calculator asks for information because every answer affects the design. Annual consumption indicates the scale of the opportunity, while the time of day that electricity is used helps determine how valuable battery storage could be. Roof dimensions, direction, pitch and shading influence how many panels may fit and how much they might generate.
The questions also distinguish between energy and power. Battery capacity, measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh), tells us how much energy can be stored. Inverter output, measured in kilowatts (kW), determines how much power can be supplied at one time. A large battery connected through an undersized inverter may still leave a home importing electricity during periods of high demand.
Understanding today—and planning for tomorrow
A solar installation can remain on a property for decades, so it should not be designed only around this year’s electricity bill. A homeowner may later add an electric vehicle, heat pump, extension, home office, air conditioning or other significant load.
Future-proofing does not mean automatically installing the largest system available. It means discussing likely changes, allowing sensible capacity where appropriate and avoiding a design that becomes obsolete as soon as the household grows.
Protection from misleading bundle comparisons
Headline packages make solar appear easy to compare: a set number of panels, a battery and an inverter for one price. The missing information is whether that arrangement suits the customer.
The calculator gives homeowners enough understanding to ask better questions. Why has this panel quantity been recommended? Will the battery cover evening demand? Can the inverter support peak loads? Can the system expand? What is included in the installation and aftercare?
Once those questions are being asked, it becomes much harder to sell an unsuitable system purely because the headline price looks attractive.
An indication is not a technical design
No online calculator can inspect a roof, consumer unit, cable route or network connection. The result is therefore an early planning indication—not a binding quotation, structural assessment or permission to install.
A smart final design still requires consultation and a technical site survey. That process confirms the roof condition, access, electrical work, equipment position, network requirements and the components needed for a complete installation.
The relationship continues after installation
Solar and battery storage should not be treated as a box delivered to a doorstep. The installer and homeowner are entering a long-term partnership involving monitoring, technical assistance, warranty support and system optimisation.
